Following up her workshop in July this year, Hilde Hauan Johnsen will continue dyeing fabrics with plants, allowing participants to learn and create at the same time. Participants will play a key role in creating an artwork by Hauan Johnsen, due to be exhibited as part of Tromsø Kunstforening's 100th anniversary exhibition later this year. The finished result can be seen when the exhibition opens in October.
The workshop will take place on Thursday 7th and Friday 8th August, between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m each day. We will meet at the boathouse in Muséparken by Tromsø Kunstforening's old (and future) premises. We will provide coffee, tea, snacks and lunch for everyone who contributes and takes part in the workshop. No prior experience of plant dyeing is required for this workshop.
Participants are advised to wear clothes appropriate for being outside and using natural dyes, and can happily bring a bag or basket to aid in the harvesting of plants if possible.
This workshop is part of the long -term outdoor project Goahtegieddi - Finngamsletta, where Tromsø Kunstforening, in collaboration with local artists Hilde Hauan Johnsen, Joar Nango and Kåre Aleksander Grundvåg, work towards transforming Muséparken into a place of use and activity with a focus on natural diversity in urban spaces, rooted in local knowledge traditions and ideas. The place name Finngamsletta was used in the early 1900s and bears witness to the area's former use as a Sami settlement.
