The Demands of Ordinary Devotion, Eva Giolo, 2022, 12 min
Filmed around the city of Rome, The Demands of Ordinary Devotion captures a collection of minor acts of care, intimacy and creation. Although the protagonists never appear together, they are inextricably bound by their actions - meaning is conveyed through movement, slowly forming a visual exploration of physicality. The Demands of Ordinary Devotion invites a reflection on the process of making, the prospect of motherhood, and uncertainties in creation, balance and composition.
Eva Giolo (b.1991, BE) is an artist working in film, video, and installation. Her work places particular focus on the female experience, exploring themes of intimacy, permanence and memory, along with the analysis of language and semiotics.
Her works are cinematic poems that show a proclivity for capturing family histories - her own or those of others. Using documentary strategies, she paints filmic portraits and creates a window on invisible, usually private, inner worlds, capturing moments of everyday life.
