During the workshop, participants will create and learn simultaneously with Hilde Hauan Johnsen, who will introduce the basic process of dyeing fabrics with plants, from picking suitable plants with respect for sustainability, to what fabrics to use for the desired outcomes. This workshop plays a key role in creating an artwork by Hauan Johnsen due to be exhibited as part of Tromsø Kunstforening's 100th anniversary exhibition later this year. The finished result can be seen when the exhibition opens in October.
The workshop will take place on Friday 4th and Saturday 5th July, between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. We will meet at the boathouse in Muséparken by Tromsø Kunstforening's old (and future) premises. We will provide coffee, tea, snacks and lunch for everyone who contributes and takes part in the workshop. Participation in the entire event is not required; you can come and go as you please. No prior knowledge is required.
Participants are advised to wear clothes appropriate for being outside and using natural dyes, and can bring a bag or basket for harvesting plants if desired.
The workshop is part of the longterm outdoor project Goahtegieddi - Finngamsletta, where Tromsø Kunstforening, in collaboration with local artists Hilde Hauan Johnsen, Joar Nango and Kåre Aleksander Grundvåg, are working to transform Muséparken into a place of use and activity with a focus on natural diversity in urban spaces, rooted in local worlds of ideas and knowledge traditions. The place name Finngamsletta was used in the early 1900s and bears witness to the area's former use as a Sami settlement.
The workshop is being realised with support from Samfunnsløftet.
Goahtegieddi - Finngamsletta is being implemented with support from KORO, the Relief Fund for Visual Artists and the Arts Council Norway.
